How to Pack for 10 Days in One Carry-On

Side by side: one person holding a black duffel with tan trim, another carrying an olive green duffel with black trim

Ten days is the point where many travelers give up and check a bag. It doesn’t have to be that way. With a short list, the right bag, and one simple packing split, ten days of outfits fit in a single carry-on, and you walk straight past the baggage carousel when you land.

Here is the method, step by step.

1. Build a 10-day capsule wardrobe

The secret isn’t packing smaller clothes. It’s packing fewer pieces that all work together. Pick one base color (black, navy, or camel) and one or two accent colors, and make sure every top works with every bottom.

A 10-day list that covers most trips:

  • 3 bottoms: dress pants, jeans, and a skirt or chinos
  • 5–6 tops: a mix of tees, shirts, and one knit
  • 1 dress or dressy outfit for dinners out
  • 1 warm layer: a sweater or a light jacket
  • 2–3 pairs of shoes, including the pair you wear on the plane
  • Underwear and socks for 5–7 days, plus one quick sink wash mid-trip
  • Sleepwear, activewear, or swimwear, only if you’ll really use them

Lay everything out on the bed before you pack. If a piece only goes with one other piece, it stays home.

2. Wear your bulkiest pieces on the plane

Your heaviest shoes, your jacket, and your thickest sweater take up the most room in any bag, so travel in them. Cabins are often cool anyway, and a jacket makes a decent pillow.

3. Split your clothes into two piles

This is the step that changes everything. Before anything goes in the bag, sort your clothes into:

  • Pile A: things that crease. Dresses, blazers, button-down shirts, dress pants.
  • Pile B: soft and bulky. Knits, tees, activewear, sleepwear, underwear, socks.

Pile A needs to hang or lie flat. Pile B can be squeezed. Packing both the same way is why suitcases end up overstuffed and full of wrinkles at the same time.

4. Hang Pile A in a garment compartment

A garment duffel gives the clothes that crease their own space. The Luxe MegaBagâ„¢ unzips and opens flat into a garment bag with a hanger hook, so your dress, blazer, and shirts go in on their hangers at full length, and the bag folds around them as it closes. They come out with far fewer creases.

5. Vacuum-compress Pile B

Soft, bulky clothes are mostly air, and a vacuum bag takes it out. Fold your knits, tees, and activewear into the bag, close the zip fully, and let the electric air pump draw the air out through the valve. The stack shrinks down and stays neat.

We offer two versions, and both come with a rechargeable electric air pump: the black Vacuum Bag Kit and the white Compressible Vacuum Cubes. Both are made to fit inside the MegaBag or a standard carry-on.

Sequence with arrows: a stack of folded clothes, then a full black vacuum bag, then the bag lying flat and deflated

One honest note: compression saves space, not weight. Ten days of clothes weigh the same flat or fluffy, so check your airline’s carry-on weight limit before you fill every gap.

6. Give shoes and toiletries their own spot

Keep shoes and liquids away from your clothes. Pack shoes sole to sole in a shoe bag, and put toiletries and small items in the MegaBag’s zip pockets at each end.

For liquids, US TSA checkpoints currently allow containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, all in one quart-size bag. Rules can change, so check TSA’s liquids page before you fly. Solid shampoo and bar soap save space and never leak.

7. Pack in the right order

Flat and heavy first: the compressed vacuum bags and your shoes. Then the pieces that need care. Last, your first-night outfit and anything you’ll want on arrival, where you can reach it without unpacking.

8. Check the bag and your fare before you go

A carry-on-only trip only works if your bag is allowed on board. The MegaBag fits the carry-on limits of 50+ airlines (see the list of airlines) and weighs 0.9 kg (about 2 lb) in the Classic Edition, or 1.6 kg (about 3.5 lb) with the detachable rollers. Always check your own airline and fare too: some basic fares include only a small personal item.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really fit 10 days in a carry-on?

Yes, with a capsule wardrobe, one mid-trip wash, and compression for the bulky layers. Packed this way, the MegaBag holds up to 12 days of outfits. A garment duffel helps because dresses and shirts lie flat instead of fighting for space.

Do vacuum bags wrinkle clothes?

Compression can crease crisp fabrics like cotton shirts, linen, and silk, so keep those in the garment compartment. Knits, jersey, activewear, and underwear compress without trouble.

How do I charge the air pump?

The pump is rechargeable over USB-C. Pack it charged so you can compress again for the trip home.
